What impacts did the fourth crusade have
The Europeans took some of the riches that they had captured in the sack of Constantinople (piles of money, jewelry and gold) and brought it back to Rome. Pope Innocent III had accepted these stolen riches.
After the fourth crusade the Byzantine empire became the Latin empire the empire was apportioned between the crusade leaders and Venice by a treaty. Boniface was regarded as the new emperor even though he was not elected. Boniface's brother Renier of Montferrat was married to the empress Maria Komnene who ruled from 1170's to 1180's Which made the Venetians think that he had too many connections with the Byzantine empire. Therefore the Venetians crowned Baldwin of Flanders 1204-1205.The Latin Empire began facing many different enemies such as Epirus and Nicaea (the Greek byzantine states), in addition to the Seljuk Sultanate and the Bulgarian empire. The Latin Empire had a total of 7 emperors, The Latin Empire Lasted From 1204 to 1261, it lasted 57 years. The Latin Empire finally fell to Nicaea (a Byzantine state), general Alexios Strategopoulos restored the Byzantine Empire for his emperor. The other Latin states survived and held land in modern day Greece, a few lasted till the 18th century.
Byzantium was already in a state of decline. The capture of Constantinople increased political declination. This caused the Byzantium to later become an easy target for the Turks and Muslims. This crusade was the end of the main crusades, this awarded the overall victory to Islam Which was the exact opposite of the original intentions. The city of Constantinople and the Byzantine empire never recovered from this crusade. The city of Constantinople fell in 1453 to the Ottoman Empire about 250 years after the fourth crusade.
