Causes.
The causes of the fourth crusade where very mixed. Many of them being gaining riches from the holy land. But on the later stops of the crusade it was to raid Constantinople of its riches and to become rich. But regaining the holy land was the main concept of the crusades and was the original idea in till they lacked the funds to pay off the Venetians's expenses back. They had to pay back some of the Venetians crusaders due to them running out of money from buying multiple boats and a army. So not having any money they where troubled, They where on several boats with unpayed killers and they needed the money quick. So instead of going on a journey to go recapture the holy land they diverted it with out the pope's control and sailed to Constantinople which they would raid the city of its gold and pay back the debt.
In this battle there was many Venetians deaths and not so many crusader deaths since the crusaders where far more prepared then the Venetians. This made the pope excommunicate the crusaders on the trip.
